  4. INTRODUCTION
  5. ------------
  6. Shorthand is a typing productivity tool designed to work concurrently
  7. with most Microsoft Windows 3.1 applications.  Just as a stenographer 
  8. uses shorthand notation to represent words and phrases, Shorthand 
  9. allows you to represent a string of text with a much shorter 
  10. abbreviation or keyword.  Instead of typing the text string, 
  11. you type the shorter keyword and Shorthand takes care of typing 
  12. the text string into your application.  For example, you can
  13. represent the phrase "as soon as possible" with the keyword "asap."
  14. The next time you need to type the phrase "as soon as possible" into
  15. your favorite Windows word processor, you simply type "\asap", press 
  16. the Enter key, and Shorthand types "as soon as possible" right into 
  17. your Windows word processor.  The leading "\" is a hot key character 
  18. that signals Shorthand that you are about to type a keyword.  (You 
  19. can change the hot key character to another character if you wish.)  
  20. Shorthand works with most Windows word processors, text editors and 
  21. even text fields in most Windows dialog boxes.  A good illustration 
  22. of the flexibility of Shorthand is the common (and tedious) procedure 
  23. of entering filenames.  Do you have a file which you use a lot?  Are 
  24. you tired of having to retype or navigate through directories every 
  25. time you need to open the file?  With Shorthand, you first enter the
  26. filename and a unique keyword into Shorthand's dictionary.  The next 
  27. time you need to specify the filename in an application's File Open 
  28. or File Save dialog box, just activate Shorthand, type the filename's 
  29. keyword and Shorthand will type the filename for you!

  33. Shorthand Version 1.0 is a shareware program that can be freely
  34. uploaded to any public bulletin board such as Compuserve, Prodigy,
  35. etc.  Shareware distributors may distribute this program for a small
  36. fee to cover their distribution costs.

  52. for a description of the new features in Shorthand 2.0.  
  53. Unlike Version 1.0, Shorthand Version 2.0 is not a shareware program and is 
  54. available only to registered users.

  60. INSTALLATION
  61. ------------
  62. Copy all the files to a directory onto your hard disk.  The file called
  63. "SHORTHND.EXE" is the executable file.

  65. RUNNING SHORTHAND
  66. -----------------
  67. The application name is "SHORTHND.EXE".  You can run SHORTHND.EXE by 
  68. starting the Windows File Manager and double-clicking on the file 
  69. "SHORTHND.EXE".

  71. You may want to create a program group and program icon for Shorthand.
  72. Please refer to the Windows User Manual for instructions on how to set up
  73. a new application. (This can be done from the Program Manager, "File" menu,
  74. "New" command.)
